The infrastructure funding announcement, believed to be the largest in Oakville's history, took place at 430 George Wyecroft Rd., Smitherman where the facility is scheduled to be operational by late March 2011. The federal Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities John Baird noted the $30-million investment for Oakville is part of an initiative that will see the federal, provincial and municipal governments invest nearly $3.4 billion for 1,373 infrastructure projects across Ontario. "One of the most important responsibilities government has is to provide leadership on the economy, to provide leadership and to give our economy a much needed shot in the arm," said Baird. Baird noted investing in infrastructure was one way to make a recovery happen. The $30 million was equally presented to Oakville by the federal and provincial governments. The Town will fund the remaining $15 of the $45-million facility through its capital budget.
