OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 17, 2009 · 8 Police issue warning after stranger approaches young girls Halton police are asking parents to take extra precautions with their young children after a suspicious man approached two young girls last week. Police said the first incident took place at around 8:30 a.m. on June 10 when a stranger approached a nine-year-old Oakville girl as she walked to school along Cornerbrooke Crescent. The man asked the girl where she was going, where she lived and then asked her name. The girl knew she was not supposed to talk to strangers and ran to her school bus. The following day, shortly after 3:30 p.m., a 12-year-old girl was riding her bicycle on Devon Road when an older model green minivan approached her. The driver asked the girl if she wanted him to pick up her bike and drive her home. The girl declined the offer and rode home where she reported what had happened. In both situations the man is described as having dark skin, short black hair with a medium build. Police are asking parents to talk to their children and remind them that when they play they should play together and not play in remote areas of parks or take shortcuts home through woods. Children should not loiter as they go to or from school, they should never go anywhere with a stranger under any circumstances and they should not be afraid to say no to a stranger's requests or to run away when approached by a stranger. Police also remind children not to accept candies, toys or money from a stranger for any reason and to notify their parents if approached. Children should also let their parents know where they are and where they are going. There are also plenty of unfortunate examples of why teenagers should follow these rules as well. Halton police are continuing to investigate these incidents and anyone with information related to them is asked to contact the Halton Regional Police Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4747, ext. 2215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
