17 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 17, 2009 Duty calls Chamber to reschedule Raitt luncheon Minister of Natural Resources and Halton MP Lisa Raitt will be unable to attend an Oakville Chamber of Commerce luncheon that was scheduled to take place at the Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre on Friday. The minister's staff apologized to the Oakville Chamber for the absence, but pointed out that a confidence vote that could bring down the government will be taking place that day, meaning all MPs have to remain in Ottawa. Talks between the Oakville Chamber and Raitt's staff are underway to reschedule the luncheon with a date in August being examined as a possibility. Oakville Place Food Court goes green The Oakville Place Food Court has gone green with the introduction of a new option to their customers: having their food served on washable plates. With the average child generating (from disposable lunches) at least 67 pounds of waste per year, this ecofriendly idea will hopefully enhance the experience at the food court, as Oakville Place reps say, while helping the environment. The program would reduce food waste at the food court by nearly 50 per cent within the next year, "At Oakville Place, we want to treat our customers to a more sophisticated shopping experience, and the first step in the food court is to enjoy a meal on real dishes," says Jenny Jovanovic, Marketing Coordinator for Oakville Place. "Once customers are finished their meal, we will remove their plates and tray and we do the dishes!" The program will use the new energy efficient dishwasher that reduces water use (16 litres of water per load, that's one-tenth of water used in the typical load) and will have dishes air dry (to save electricity), thus having a huge impact it has on the levels of garbage generated in the food court. "It is a simple idea, but one that can make a big difference," says Jovanovic, "and our goal is to build on our current programs. As a shopping centre, Oakville Place is committed to finding new ways to reduce energy and waste." The mall has also purchases energy from Bullfrog Power, uses an electric car for exterior security patrols, switched to pesticide-free landscaping and has a full-service organic and recycling program. Due to corporate policies, some vendors may not be participating in this program. Dear Resident, Southdown Station Environmental Update an unwavering commitment to environmental and socially responsible corporate leadership As you may be aware, Sithe Global is proposing to build and operate Southdown Station, a natural gas-fuelled, combined cycle facility at 759-797 Winston Churchill Boulevard in Mississauga, in response to the Ontario Power Authority's (the "OPA") recent Request for Proposals for up to approximately 850 MW of generation in the Southwest GTA (the "RFP"). Sithe Global is proud of the social and environmental leadership we have shown in our efforts to pursue a modern and progressive design for Southdown Station since it was first conceived 10 years ago. The sophisticated station site layout we are proposing would set a new standard for development of this industrial area and we remain committed to employing the best available emissions control technology. Since Southdown Station obtained its required environmental approvals in 2002, the policy and regulatory environment surrounding new generation development has changed dramatically. The OPA, a crown corporation formed in 2005 charged with ensuring the adequacy of electricity generation in Ontario, now typically offers long-term contracts through a competitive RFP bidding process in order to ensure Ontario's ratepayers receive the best value for any new generating capacity. our original plans to use a state-of-the art air-cooled condenser. While more costly, the air-cooled condenser we planned from the outset minimizes the plant's water use and eliminates any concerns with fogging and groundlevel icing that may arise in connection with other cooling methods. INDSOR D RIVE ROYAL W CNR SPUR WINSTON WINSTON CHURCHILL BLVD. In light of the OPA's RFP specifications, we have carefully re-examined our Southdown Station design to determine if there are changes we could be making to improve our competitiveness or to protect the substantial investment we've made, over the past 10 years, in this Station's design and development approvals. In keeping with our commitment to environmental and socially responsible corporate leadership, we have elected to "stay the course" with a number of environmental controls already built in to Southdown Station's approved design. For example, while not necessarily required, selective catalytic reduction equipment that will reduce smog-causing emissions of nitrogen oxides to a fraction of the allowable standards will remain an integral part of the station's design. To learn more about these Southdown Station emission performance improvements, I am inviting you to an Environmental Update Open House to be held at: Hillside Senior Public School 1290 Kelly Road (Park Royal Community) Wednesday, June 24, 2009 4:00 to 9:00p.m. Respectfully, I am especially pleased to announce that Southdown Station's updated design will further reduce station emissions to levels substantially below those approved in 2002. In addition, after careful study and consultations, we have rejected changes to the plant's cooling system and will maintain Duane E.
