19 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 17, 2009 South Asian Focus now available in Oakville South Asian Focus has expanded its footprint throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Using a combination of dedicated Big Orange boxes as well as popular drop-off locations, the weekly newspaper catering to its diverse South Asian readership is now available throughout the GTA, stretching from Oakville in the west to Scarborough in the east, and from Mississauga and the Downtown Toronto core with Little India on Gerrard Street, to Markham and Scarborough and Richmond Hill and to all areas in between. "Starting from our home base in Brampton, we initially instituted a pilot expansion into Malton and Etobicoke last year," explains Sunil Rao, editor. "Today, we've moved further into Mississauga, and are currently in the process of spreading further throughout the GTA." The paper continues to consolidate within its home base of Brampton, where it is delivered direct to the doorstep in several areas around the city, apart from being available in high-rise residential apartments, and at popular public drop-off locations. Earlier this year, the paper also partnered with Rogers TV to launch South Asian Focus TV, a weekly call-in program appearing exclusively on Rogers Channel 10 in Brampton and Mississauga. Now in its third year, the newspaper, published Thursdays, is a comprehensive news and features package offering a weekly perspective on local and regional happenings of particular relevance to communities in the GTA. Building on common themes of interest to all South Asian communities, South Asian Focus seeks to appeal to the entire family. The stress within its pages is on news from "back home" -- which, Rao submits, is right here in the GTA. "Hence, our focus on community news. But we also encompass within our columns several other sections and departments," he said. Specific sections include: business, sports, opinion, India, Pakistan, Subcontinent, Diaspora, lifestyle, health and fitness, wellness, leisure, comics and, of course, Bollywood entertainment. Rao is ably aided by his colleague Nouman Khalil, and by a dedicated team of media and advertising professionals. His focus is on reflecting the hopes and aspirations of the fast-growing South Asian communities, which have contributed immensely towards the explosive development of the region, and Canada. South Asian Focus is published by Metroland Media Group Limited, a subsidiary of broadlybased media company Torstar Corp, whose flagship is the Toronto Star, Canada's biggest newspaper.
