OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, June 18, 2009 · 14 Sears salutes national riders Join Sears as it welcomes the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride nation cyclists to Oakville for a celebratory community event in the north parking lot of Sears at Oakville Place at approximately 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 20. The Sears National Kids Cancer Ride, the longest cycling event in the world in support of kids cancer, is currently moving across Canada to raise awareness and funds in support of cancer research and treatment programs for children living with and beyond cancer and their families. The national cyclists departed Vancouver on June 13 and will arrive in Halifax on June 24. When the cyclists arrive in Halifax they will have covered more than 7,000 km. Cancer is the leading cause of non-accidental death in children in Canada. Each year, about 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer. More children die of cancer each year than asthma, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and congenital anomalies combined. The treatment and cure for these children is often over a period of several years, the effects of which can smother childhood. Saturday's event will be a national rest stop of the riders and a barbecue in support of the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride.
