There's an army of generous people working hard to give one little girl with multiple special needs a better quality of life at home. Mackenzie Potter, 8, is totally unaware she is at the centre of a community fundraiser slated for tomorrow (Saturday). It has attracted the attention of Canadian crooner Michael Buble and raised $4,092 in advance donations. The woman spearheading Saturday's day-long carnival and evening dinner, dance, auction and raffle, is Hazel Peel. She and Mackenzie's mom, Carolyn, were friends in high school and they recently reconnected after discovering each had moved back to the town of their childhood. That's when Peel discovered the Potters' plans to modify their home to better accommodate Mackenzie. A retrofit of the bathroom is priority number one and an elevator to move between floors of the two-storey house is next on the to-do list -- estimated to cost about $60,000. "If I can remove one burden for them, I'm happy to do it," said Peel. The stay-at-home mom of four is working full-time to organize the fundraising events. She has help from about a dozen other people who have formed a committee to pull it all together. Through the ripple effect of the social network Facebook, Peel realized she has a lot of connections with people in a position to help. The living room and dining room of her Pilgrim's Way home is filled with giant movie posters and paraphernalia, courtesy of the neighbour next door who works for Warner Brothers, and framed watercolour paintings donated by Brampton artist Jeremy Browne. A pink dress shirt worn and autographed by Buble while on tour arrived by courier during this interview, courtesy of a friend who is a talent agent in Vancouver. Another pal who works with the National Ballet of Canada is putting together an auction item of more just-can't-be-bought treasures. "Like a little deck of cards, it's all falling into place," said Peel. Locally there has also been an avalanche of generous contributions. St. Paul's United Church on Rebecca Street (between Fourth Line and Dorval, beside the YMCA) donated its parking lot for the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. carnival, and the hall in the basement for the 7-11 p.m. dinner dance.
