Oakville Galleries receives $37,200 from government Oakville Galleries has received a $37,200 financial boost thanks to the federal government. The money came from the Ministry of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and will support a digitization project to improve collections management at Oakville Galleries. This two-part project will both improve the documentation of collections and develop an extensive online database. Established in 1980, Oakville Galleries is an amalgamation of Centennial Gallery and Gairloch Gallery. The two galleries feature Canadian and international contemporary art exhibitions and offer a variety of educational activities. "With its excellent programming and high-quality exhibitions, Oakville Galleries makes a valuable contribution to the cultural vitality of this region," said James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. "These projects complement the investments our Government is making to reflect the changing technological landscape." Terence Young, Member of Parliament said the galleries contribute to Oakville's cultural scene and are worthy recipients. "I am proud that our Government is supporting local initiatives like this one," said Young. "My own family has a history with the arts community, so I am pleased that our Government is supporting Oakville Galleries an organization that is central to Oakville's cultural identity." Staff at the Oakville Galleries is happy with the funding announcement. "This kind of support encourages institutions to stay abreast of best museological practices, and to `think big' where museum management strategies are concerned," said Matthew Hyland, interim director, Oakville Galleries. "For an institution like Oakville Galleries, the Government of Canada funding allows us to realize innovative projects we might not otherwise have the resources for." The Government of Canada has provided the funding through the Museums Assistance Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage. 35 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, June 19, 2009 "For an institution like Oakville Galleries, the Government of Canada funding allows us to realize innovative projects we might not otherwise have the resources for."
