5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, June 25, 2009 Keepsake braids will be turned into a wig Continued from page 1 "I never liked the way they did it." The solution to the situation for Spicer was simple. No long hair would mean no more poorlydone braids. So when Spicer turned eight, she enlisted the help of the town barber, her uncle John Stewart, in cutting away her long locks. "Heaven knows what I looked like after," said Spicer. "I remember we had a long driveway and when my dad came home I ran down the driveway to meet him, and when he saw me I could see that he had tears running down from his eyes. I've never forgotten how sad he was to see me with my braids cut off because he loved them." Spicer had never seen her father cry before and the image had a profound impact on her. Since she couldn't reattach the hair to her head, Spicer did the next best thing. She placed the braids in an old chocolate box so they would not be discarded. Eventually, Spicer grew up and her life took her to many places, including England, where she lived with her husband for many years. The braids would stay in an old cedar chest in Spicer's childhood home until she retrieved them in 1984. "I had been thinking about giving them to the Canadian Cancer Society and I think what triggered it came up a couple nights ago. We were out, about 10 of us gals, we have kind of a birthday club and we celebrate each others birthdays. They tease me about how I am such a pack rat and how I save everything," said Spicer. "They mentioned that I still had my braids and then I thought it's probably time." Despite the many years, Spicer's braids show no signs of their age with their colour and quality somehow maintained over the years. Spicer said she had deeply personal reasons for wanting to turn these memories of her childhood over to the Canadian Cancer Society. "My mom and dad died of cancer and I'm a cancer survivor myself and so I try to do what I can for cancer," said Spicer. "I contribute a lot, like most everyone does, but ever since I moved here in 1984 I've been involved in the April collections (Daffodil Days). It's something near and dear to my heart." Staff at the Canadian Cancer Society office were not concerned about the age of the hair, asking only if it had been dyed or treated in anyway. As it had not been, staff accepted the donation and noted they know a wig maker who is eager to begin work with the hair. "If somebody can make something out of this that's fantastic," said Spicer. "I'd like to pass them on."
