OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 8, 2009 · 26 Kotulak gives A's walk-off victory Andrew Kotulak's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Oakville A's to a 5-4 win over Etobicoke in Central Ontario Baseball Association Major play Monday at Oakville Park. The clutch hit made a winner out of Matt Chisamore, Oakville's fourth pitcher of the night. Gord Robertson, Alex Hawley and Marc Walton had pitched earlier in the game as the A's used a bullpen by committee plan after competing in a tournament in London last weekend. Robertson was touched up for two runs in the first inning, but the A's tied the game in the third on run-scoring hits by Jeff Jarockis and Kevin Lee. Etobicoke scored an unearned run off Walton to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth, but Oakville centre fielder Courtney Morales -- who threw out a runner at the plate earlier in the game -- tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame. Etobicoke again took the lead in the seventh, setting up Kotulak's last-bat heroics. Carter Buchanan's double and walks by Conrad Bach and Lee preceeded Kotulak's game-winning hit. Now 13-6 in COBA play, the A's will next play a doubleheader Saturday in Brampton and are home Monday to Burlington. Oakville finished third at the tournament in London, defeating Ilderton 2-1 and Exeter 7-5 while dropping a 5-4 decisions to Woodslee and Milton. Christina Tanninen Dolphins send team-record eight swimmers to trials The Dolphins Swim Club of Oakville sent eight swimmers to this week's world championship trials in Montreal, their largest-ever contingent to attend the senior national meet. Lauren Dixon, Meaghon McCann, Oleg Murzenko, Colin Russell, Sinead Russell, Christina Tanninen, Marina Biasutto and Isabella Nat will compete at the trials. Three silvers in Quebec Competing against teams from across North America and some athletes that participated in the 2008 Olympic Summer Games, the Dolphins managed to take home three silver medals from the Coupe Du Quebec Grand Prix Circuit. The Dolphins' own Olympian, Colin Russell, won silver in the men's 200mere freestyle as part of his preparation for the trials. Russell's sister, Sinead, added silver medals in the women's 100m and 200m backstroke events. She also reached the finals in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyles. The Dolphins' other individual finalist was Tanninen (women's 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly). The relay team of Biasutto, Nat, Larissa Ruiz and Tanninen reached the finals in both the women's 4x200m and 4x100m freestyle events. Novices finish strong In the Dolphins' novice squad's last competition of the season, the team earned 22 gold medals, 16 silver and 21 bronze while setting seven club records. Leading the way were seven-year-old Shannon Russell (six gold), nine-yearold Jennifer Hu (four gold, one bronze) and Nicholas Pinney (four gold, one bronze). "Davey played phenomenal," said Buzz forward Alex Kruse. "He's played that way all series." Diruscio's stellar play -- other than a 10goal hiccup in Game 2, he allowed a combined total of 10 goals in the other three games -- likely came as a surprise to his teammates, considering Oakville head coach Ken Gillies wasn't even certain who his start- ing netminder was when the series began. It was a tossup between Diruscio and fellow rookie Tyler Glebe after the Buzz lost veteran goalie Cam Watts to its junior A affiliate Burlington Chiefs a couple weeks before the playoffs. "We were a little concerned," Kruse admitted, "but they knew what situation they were stepping into this year. Wattsie is definitely missed, but (Diruscio and Glebe) have done their jobs." Kruse also did his job in the first four games of the playoffs, contributing three goals and three assists. "Every time I run by the penalty box, I just picture him being there (doing the announcing)," Alex said. "I just try to sustain the same effort I'd put out any other day that he was in the stands watching. "Lacrosse is a game. It's a chance to step outside of your life and just focus on what needs to be done on the floor. It's a chance to get away from all the pressures of the world." BUZZ BITS: Bryan Campbell scored the winner Sunday, finishing a beautiful individual effort by spinning against two defenders and ripping a shot into the top corner of the net... Connor Gamble, Mike Dawson and Braden Gallant also tallied for Oakville. Nick Soubry, Dylan Gilbert, Kruse and Gamble earned assists... The Buzz's Brad Galante and Rebels' Jesse Johnson had a spirited fight in the middle of the second period Sunday... Spencer Gallant, Kruse, Gilbert and Gamble scored for Oakville Friday in Game 3, a 6-4 loss in Six Nations... The winner of last night's Game 5 would face the Welland Warlords in the second round.
