Police issue boating safety bulletin The Halton Regional Police Service Marine Unit is calling on boaters to make it a happy and tragedy-free boating season. Before setting out on that next cruise, police advise boaters to check weather forecasts, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to come back and check the boat to make sure the engine is fine, there is enough fuel and the boat has the needed equipment. Police also ask that boaters obey all nautical rules of the waterways, refrain from overloading their boat, equip the boat with navigation lights, whistle and safety kit and make sure every person in the boat is wearing a lifejacket. Boaters are also reminded that consuming alcohol while operating a boat is a crime and is punishable by law. Proof of competency is required for those who operate a pleasure craft fitted with a motor and were born after April 1, 1983. The same goes for those who operate a pleasure craft fitted with a motor that is less than 13 feet in length (regardless of age).
