OAK top small team More offence needed to take next step at Central meet 19 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, July 9, 2009 Continued from page 18 The Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) won the Small Team Award at last month's Central Region Summer Team Championships in Etobicoke. Sherry Patel led the way for the 60-member OAK team, winning the 50-metre and 100m freestyle as well as the 100m fly. Victor Komadina added victories in the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley. Jarrod Baddeliyange (100m breaststroke), Aiden Tyrrell (50m breaststroke), Jordan Pollock (50m butterfly), Bryanna Samuels (50m freestyle) and Owen DuncanSnobel (50m backstroke) also won events for OAK. Jessica Morris, Joel Pearson, Tommy Ho, Adham Assaad and Jillian Kent each earned silvers. Chloe Haslam, Luka Tomic, Daniel Rosales, Artem Ivakhenko, Laura Komadina and Curtis Li added bronze medals. Many of OAK's swimmers competed in the long course junior provincials this past weekend in London. OAK's younger swimmers were also busy recently, helping the club finish third at the North York Aquatic Club's May Performance Meet at the University of Toronto. OAK finished with 2,723 points, 171 behind secondplace Mississauga. North York won the meet title with 6,631 points. Winning gold medals for Oak were Carly Jazbec, Rebecca Gibson, Kristina Mazalica, Avery Tronsen, Mackenzie Hamill, Nicholas Radford, David Whiteside, Alexander Glista and Curtis Li. Tarrah Price, Rebecca Walter, Madeleine Jeffrey, Ellie Symes, Kristen Wharin, Luka Tomic and Hamill earned silver. Christine Morris, Annika Grewal, Ariana Katsigiannis, Nahl Ahmed, Alyson Smith, Sasha Boulton, Jordan Pollock, Joel Pearson, Daniel Rosales, Jack Neal, Wezley Wright and Carter Yeudall claimed bronze. on a goal by Spencer Gallant, but allowed five unanswered goals the rest of the game, including three in the third period when the game was still close. Dylan Gilbert took a slashing penalty after time expired in the second period, leaving the Buzz a man short to open the third. The onslaught of goals began right off the opening draw when the Rebels' Jeremy Johns let a cannon of a shot fly from the top of the offensive zone, beating Diruscio to the glove side. While a lack of offence throughout the playoff round proved costly, this was the way the Buzz was built to play -- as a high-energy, defensively-minded team. The Buzz allowed the fifth-fewest goals in the league during the regular season, surrendering only 116 markers in 20 games despite playing in arguably the most com- petitive division in the league. This is a good sign for a young team that anticipates having the majority of its players back in the fold "I think the guys next year. "I think com- are definitely ing into this going to be better rink and winlacrosse players ning a game (next year)." (Game 1), plus playing two Oakville Buzz other close coach Ken Gillies games, since this is such a tough rink and there is a lot of adversity, I think the guys are definitely going to be better lacrosse players (next year)," said Buzz head coach Ken Gillies. "We had one kid come in from Orangeville who is going to go overage, and we're probably going to lose anywhere from five to seven players to the A club (Oakville's affiliate, the Burlington Chiefs), but we are still going to have a real good core of 20- to 21-year-olds, so hopefully we can get over the top." If the Buzz can find some offensive talent this offseason to add to its steady defence and succession of quality goaltending, it may have the pieces in place to beat a giant like Six Nations in its own house. "I think we're going to need to pick up our offence," said White. "I think we are going to need a lot more goal scorers that are (naturally) talented. We didn't have any goal scorers hit the 20-goal mark, as opposed to a lot of teams that did, so we are going to need to pick up some bigger guys on offence, and I think we should keep our defence the same because it (held opponents to) low scoring all the way." Short-staffed bantam A's win title in Brampton Despite having only 10 healthy players and a pitching staff stretched to the max, the Oakville major bantam A's won the championship at a recent AAA tournament in Brampton. Oakville went 2-0-1 in the opening round to advance to the semifinals, where the A's jumped out to a 5-0 lead and then held on for a 5-4 win over the London Badgers. The A's then defeated the host Brampton squad in the final, rallying from a late 5-4 deficit for a 7-5 triumph. The victory improved Oakville to 15-2-1 in league and tournament play. "These kids are a special bunch. We knew they... could field, pitch and hit with the best of them, but now, with this win, they are starting to believe in themselves," said A's manager Ron Belluomini, who is targeting a berth in the upcoming national bantam championships for his squad. "The kids are starting to understand how important it is to master the finer points of the game. The best parts about it is they are still getting better." Members of the team are Mike Morley, Jordan Mosca, Troy Findlay, Doug Bonar, Dylan Munro, Blake Weston, Mark Wilush, Steven Dressler, Stephen McPhaden, Elliott Campbell, Mike Teasdale and Nick Shanks.
