HOGs help dependent youths take step towards independence They are rebels with a cause and that cause is kids with disabilities. On Wednesday, July 15 at Sheridan College, a band of motorcycle rebels with a cause will arrive in a thundering, glittering pack to help launch young people with challenges on the journey of adult life. The Milton, Ontario chapter of the worldwide Harley Owners Group (HOG) will attend the open house/graduation of ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development, the Children's Treatment Centre (CTC) Independent Living Program (ILP). Every year, the program is held at Sheridan. It is designed to help those who've used the CTC services to move forward after turning 19 and no longer qualifying for CTC assistance. After the graduation wraps up and the youths move forward with their lives, the bikers will come back next month -- riding to raise funds to support next year's group of ILP learners graduate from the same program. Youths who need ILP are those with a range of disabilities who leave the care of Ontario's CTCs when they reach age 19. ErinoakKids cares for children and youths with challenges including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, traumatic injury and many other diagnoses, in Peel, Halton, Dufferin and for some programs, Wellington and Waterloo. Some of this care is funded by government but when the kids reach age 19 they must begin to fend for themselves. The ILP teaches them how to do that. "The Independent Living Program teaches them how to take care of themselves, but it is not funded by government," Fewtrell said. "Without donors we could not offer this essential program." Riding to the rescue are Milton HOG and other donors who, each year, insist on being there when the year's ILP class meets for the final time at Sheridan College in Oakville, for its open house and graduation. The open house is at the Sheridan College Oakville residence, 1410 Trafalgar Rd. from 7-9 p.m. For information, visit www.erinoakkids.ca. 17 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, July 10, 2009 229 save $170 Mega Catch Premier 99 TM 69 European Engineering Combined With Traditional Workmanship "Building on the Brightest Ideas Around Glass" 99 UV Guard beach shade Helps protect against the sun's harmful UV rays. 52½ x 90 x 57".
