OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, July 10, 2009 · 30 Chemistry an advantage in doubles A's planning Continued from page 29 Martin Beran week and hanging out off the court as well. The chemistry between Hibberd and MacDonald has led to an advantage in doubles, since they were often going up against teams that were formed days before tournaments began. "It's just knowing what the other person is going to come up with, and when," MacDonald said. "We work together as a team more than two individuals just smacking balls on the court." They both prefer playing singles -- MacDonald was second in singles at provincials while Hibberd placed fifth -- but their greatest success has come playing together. Their styles complement each other, with Hibberd providing a power game at the back and MacDonald contributing finesse shots around the net. MacDonald will have plenty of opportunity to continue working on his game while at Xavier, while Hibberd -- who had Division 1 scholarship opportunities himself but chose to focus on aca- demics -- intends to continue playing competitively while at McGill. And, perhaps, they'll eventually team up again down the line. "As far as our tennis partnership goes, there won't be much opportunity to compete together," Hibberd said. "There might be the odd tournament here and there. But we'll still see each other." Beran also headed to nationals Oakville's Martin Beran will also compete at the nationals next month. The 13-year-old qualified by winning two national selection tournaments earlier this season. He had a strong showing at U14 provincials, reaching the finals in doubles and finishing third in singles. Beran is ranked fourth in Ontario and fifth in Canada in his age group. alumni event The Oakville A's alumni group is looking for anyone who played for the team from 1975-1990 to participate in an alumni exhibition game.
