Friend of the family and neighbour Mark Afheldt also had fond memories of Jesse, noting he had a great passion for BMX bike riding and enjoyed hanging out with his friends at Shell Park. Afheldt said Jesse was well on his way to realizing his goal of becoming an electrician having completed a co-op placement at Blakelock. Jesse also had an affinity for martial arts, receiving his first black belt in taekwondo at the age of 12 and eventually becoming a world champion. "He was extremely disciplined and respectful of his skills to never harm anyone and he never needed to," said Afheldt. "He had such good friends and was not a violent or mean person and just brought peace around everyone he was with." A male youth, who said he was present at the incident, noted this peaceful nature remained with Jesse to the end. "For those of you who don't know already, Jesse was with us all when this happened, he was just trying to have a good time at (Megan's) birthday party and did nothing wrong besides try to break up a fight," wrote the youth, who asked not to be identified. "Jesse was stabbed right in front of our eyes and (there was) nothing we could do besides sit and watch and do our best to help." At the skateboarding facility located at Shell Park, where Jesse would ride his bike almost every day, he is also being remem- bered. Carnations lean against one of the nearby trees as parents watch their young children skate back and forth over the facility's various obstacles. Even those who didn't know Jesse can be heard speaking about what happened and how someone who shared the skate park with them will not be coming back. Those who remember Jesse remember him as an accomplished biker and a good friend. "He was always a nice guy. He was kind of like a big teddy bear, you know, really tough, he did martial arts a lot, but he would never hurt anyone," said a skateboard instructor, who asked not to be identified. "I was really surprised when I heard they stabbed him. I wouldn't think he'd start anything with anyone." The instructor noted those who come to the skate park usually come every day, making it a particularly close-knit community. As a result Jesse's loss is being intensely felt. "It's been pretty emotional," said the instructor. "They had a memorial for him here yesterday (Sunday). They took his bike out and put flowers on it, there was a barbecue, around 60 people showed up. Lots of people even printed off stickers that say R.I.P. Jesse. I have one on my board." A memorial fund in Jesse's name has been established and donations can be made at any TD Canada Trust branch. The account number is 0398-631-7879.
