OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, July 17, 2009 · 14 Brother and sister team up to fight African poverty By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF They want to see the world change, so they are taking steps to change it. Oakville brother and sister Caleb and Shae Invidiata are calling on the public to help them better the lives of the people of Africa through involvement in the charity organization known as the Mocha Club. The club functions on the premise that a little here goes a long way in Africa with $7 a month, the cost of buying two Mocha coffees, serving to feed one person in Africa for a month or educate two children for a one year school term or save one person's life from malaria or provide clean water to seven people for one year. The organization also encourages people to choose where their money goes by forming groups of their own to work on Mocha's projects. Shae did just that, recently founding a group called betheANSWER. This group focuses on raising money for Mocha's Sudan Regrowth Project. "I fell in love with the organization and just love what they are doing in Africa," said Shae. "I had been doing research on the organization since January and just get- at th is yea r's It's m ore th an m usic t l! It kind of works like a pyramid in that I started the group and then I tell you, you join the group and then however much you want to pay a month goes into the project we are supporting." In the case of betheANSWER the funds will be helping those devastated by the genocidal conflict taking place in Darfur, Sudan with the money helping to sustain an orphanage in the village of Nyamlel, which is caring for 400 children. This group's funds will also be used to rehabilitate, educate and provide medical care to former sex slaves and supply those forced to flee the conflict with shelter, food, medication and more. "BetheANSWER is about being the answer to our own prayers," said Shae. "Instead of praying that people in Africa get food and shelter and water, why not be a part of actually getting it to them. We don't become the total overseers or providers, but we play our part as a part of the solution." As if forming a charity organization was not enough, the Invidiatas are preparing to do even more for Africa with Caleb getting ready to embark on a two-week humanitarian mission to Ethiopia through a different branch of the Mocha Club. 9 L O C A T I O N S Caleb and Shae Invidiata The excursion will see Caleb depart Oakville on July 18 for New York, where he will rendezvous with a team of around 14 people, which will then fly to Dubai and from there to Ethiopia itself. Once in Ethiopia, Caleb will spend his time between the villages of Ambo and Nazareth doing a combination of badly needed repair and maintenance jobs, and teaching. "For the first three days we will be working at a women's shelter and from there for the rest of our time we will be working with street kids and elementary students and orphans, teaching them English See Mission page 16 WHY WHEN THE GOVERNMENT IS PAYING OVER 50% OFF THE PRICE OF YOUR NEW FURNACE & A/C $ * Cash Up to Back WAIT?
