OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, July 17, 2009 · 16 Mission to Ethiopia Continued from page 14 and playing games with them and stuff like that," said Caleb. "I've always wanted to do a trip like this." Caleb noted he will also be bringing 100 pairs of socks, greatly needed amongst street kids, as well as school supplies and sports equipment. A large number of shoe polish kits will also be delivered as shining shoes is the only income many street kids have. Ethiopia is one of Africa's poorest countries, plagued by drought and famine to such a degree that in 2004 the government began a drive to move more than two million people away from the arid highlands of the east in an effort to find a lasting solution to food shortages. The prevalence of AIDS/HIV is another problem in Ethiopia with around one million people there currently living with the virus. As a result there is no shortage of people in need. Despite this, Caleb said he is still confident a difference can be made. "It's kind of like this story where there's a guy walking on a beach and he sees all of these starfish that have washed up on the shore. He picks one up and throws it back and someone says to him, `There are so many others, what difference does it make,'" said Caleb. "The guy throws another starfish back and says, `It made a difference to that one.' I'm not going to go over there and change what's happening, but I definitely am going to go over and impact someone's life." Shae and Caleb are attempting to raise $3,500 to make more humanitarian trips like this one happen. Anyone wishing to help can mail a cheque to 963 Missions, ATTN: Mocha Club/African Leadership, 10440 N. Central Expwy. Suite 122, Dallas, TX, 75231.
