Each hole on the front nine has been assigned a different number from past years as RBC Canadian Open organizers try to improve the course layout for the pros. The starting hole will now be what was formerly the fourth hole, followed by what used to be the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth. The seventh hole will be what was formerly the third hole (the par-three with the tee deck up by the The Open's new front nine clubhouse), the eighth will be what used to be the first, and the ninth will be what used to be the sec- HOLE YARDS PAR FORMERLY ond. 1 417 4 4 Canadian Open officials expect the new routing 2 527 5 5 will save players approximately 900 paces of travel 3 437 4 6 distance, a reduction that will have a positive effect 4 197 3 7 on the tournament's pace of play. Players will also 5 433 4 8 have a shorter and more direct route from the 6 458 4 9 practice range to the first tee. 7 156 3 3 The changes are also expected to alleviate conges8 485 4 1 tion that traditionally occurred around the former 9 414 4 2 third tee. Besides a high amount of spectator traffic in that area due to its central location, the area around the third tee was also a passage route for players making their way from the range to the first hole, as well as players moving from the former ninth hole to the 10th. The new routing was proposed to approximately 25 players during last year's RBC Canadian Open, as well as PGA Tour officials, to positive response. PGA Tour Competitions approved the changes after they were submitted by Canadian Open tournament director Bill Paul. Re-routing the front nine had been considered several years ago for previous championships at Glen Abbey. The Nicklaus Group was consulted and approved the change, but the Royal Canadian Golf Association -- then the course owner -- decided not to make the change. The back nine at Glen Abbey remains the same. It's a young man's world While 59-year-old Tom Watson came inches away from winning last weekend's British Open, the Canadian Open has historically been a young man's world. Only 10 champions in the tournament's 99-year history have been 40 or older. Mark Calcavecchia (45 years, two months, 29 days) is the oldest-ever player to win the Canadian Open, doing so in 2005 at Shaughnessey Golf and Country Club. Calcavecchia is competing in this weekend's tournament. The majority of Canadian Open champions (54 players) have been in their 30s, while 35 more were in their 20s. The youngest-ever to win was Albert Murray (20 years, 10 months, two days) in 1908. The oldest-ever player to make the cut at the Canadian Open was George Lyon, who qualified to play the weekend in 1925 at the age of 67. The youngest to make the cut was Bob Panaski, who accomplished the feat in 1957 at the age of 15. Mark Calcavecchia (1998) OAKVILLE SOCCER CLUB The Canadian drought Pat Fletcher is well-known to be the last Canadian player to win the Canadian Open, doing so in 1954. However, it's been even longer than that since a born-andbred Canuck has won the tournament. Karl Keffer is the only Canadian-born player to ever win the championship, hoisting the trophy in 1909 and 1914. Charles Murray (winning in 1906 and 1911), Albert Murray (victorious in 1908 and 1913) and Fletcher were raised in Canada but were born elsewhere. The United States boasts the most Canadian Open champions (52). England has nine, Scotland has five, Australia owns four, South Africa has three, and New Zealand and Fiji each have one. Mike Weir and Stephen Ames are Canada's top hopes to end the drought. Weir, born in Brights Grove, Ont., came close in 2004, falling to Vijay Singh in a memorable playoff at the Abbey. Ames, a native of Trinidad and Tobago who obtained Canadian Mike Weir (2008) citizenship in 2004, tied for seventh at the 2005 Open.
