OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, July 23, 2009 · 2 Oakville's generosity earns honour from Christian Children's Fund Oakville and its residents were honoured for generosity with a Lifetime Giving Award from the Christian Children's Fund of Canada (CCFC). The honour, announced last week, was for donating more than $1.9 million over the years to poverty-stricken children in developing countries around the world. Oakville donations in early 2009 pushed the town into the top 100 most-generous cities nationwide, out of approximately 4,600 Canadian cities and towns that donate to the organization. "As Canadians, most of us have everything we need to survive," said Laurie Asikainen of Oakville. "I felt it was important to share our good fortune with a poverty-stricken child who truly needs our help," said Asikainen. Oakville residents have sponsored children or purchased gifts for children in need, resulting in life-saving support for thousands of children and families living in poverty in countries like Ghana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Sri Lanka, India, Nicaragua and Paraguay. "I want to thank sponsors in Canada," said nine-year old, Ruth Haruna, CCFC-sponsored child in Zagyur, Ghana. "I'm so happy to be able to go to school now; sponsorship helps to pay for my school fees and uniform and school supplies. With an education I have hope to become something in life." More than 52,000 children around the world are involved in CCFC programs. "Oakville has shown a generosity of spirit that needs to be acknowledged, especially in light of current economic challenges," said Mark Lukowski, CCFC's CEO. For almost 50 years, the CCFC has helped children and families of all faiths break the cycle of extreme poverty around the world. It is a Canadian-based, child-centred international development organization. For more information on CCFC, visit www.ccfcanada.ca. West Nile warning issued Halton Region's health department is reminding area residents to cover up and slap on bug repellant as the community enters West Nile Virus season. "Although West Nile virus has not been in the forefront of infectious diseases so far this summer, everyone still needs to continue to take precautions," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton Region's medical officer of health, in a written release. "July, August, and September are the months when we typically see mosquitoes test positive for West Nile Virus." To prevent the spread of mosquitoes carrying the virus, the Region is asking residents to eliminate or reduce areas of standing water, such as bird baths, old tires and children's toys, that act as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. For personal protection, the health department advises against being outdoors between dusk and dawn, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants with tightlywoven fabric, and use a mosquito repellent with DEET. In shady, wooded areas, mosquitoes can be active all day and night. Although Halton Region is deemed a high-risk territory for WNV, there were no reported human cases in the community in 2008. There were two human cases in 2007, but regional staff believe the individuals likely acquired the infection outside of Halton. According to the Region, of those who become infected with WNV, 80 per cent will not have any symptoms but the rest could have fever, nausea, muscle aches, headache and rash. In the rare severe cases, people can develop encephalitis or meningitis, which can lead to serious brain damage and even death. The risk for serious illness when infected with WNV increases with age therefore elderly persons and older adults need to pay particular attention to protecting themselves, said the Region. Central air conditioning can account for up to half of your summer electricity bill. In fact, households now use more electricity in the summer months than they do in the winter months, in part due to the operation of their central air conditioning unit. Making sure your central air conditioning system is operating to its peak potential and using it wisely can contribute greatly to energy conservation. After all, no one would expect you to run in a marathon, after sitting dormant all winter, so before you set your central air conditioning unit to run all summer long, it is best to get it into tiptop shape first! Furnace King will do annual pre-season check-ups to ensure that your central air conditioning is running as efficiently as possible. The technician will check thermostat settings, tighten electrical connections, measure voltage and current on motors, lubricate all moving parts, inspect drainage, check system controls for safety, clean condenser coils, check refrigerant pressures and clean and adjust blower components for proper system air flow. The technician will also inspect, clean and change air filters, a dirty filter causes higher energy costs and can damage equipment. Government agencies and utilities have recognized the importance of maintaining equipment for better energy efficiency and offer incentives and rebates for homeowners to maintain or replace their units.
