17 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, July 24, 2009 Amazing Race for $MOMO again this fall H ello from Halla. First, I want you all to know that I turned 13 on June 6, just over a month ago. My grandmother says that means that I have to start thinking like an adult more and playing less. That got me to thinking about all the young people in Africa who are dealing with AIDS and its effects. It is quite startling that Africa has 11.6 million children under 18 who have lost one or both parents to AIDS. UNICEF estimates that by 2010, as many as 15.7 million children in Africa could be orphaned by AIDS. In the 2008 Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic, UNAIDS estimates that there are 22 million people living with HIV in sub-Sahara Africa, accounting for 67 per cent of all people living with the virus worldwide.
