OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, July 24, 2009 · 42 Best in Brantford Whitecaps reach district final After winning five of their first six games at the Little League Ontario District 1 Major Championship, the Oakville Whitecaps were scheduled to play for a district title last night (Thursday) in Erindale against High Park. The winner of the championship game would advance to the Little League Ontario Championship in Pembroke, which will determine qualifiers for the national tournament. The Canadian champion will compete in the Little League World Series. Oakville earned its berth in the district final with a 7-2 victory over Ancaster, breaking the game open with three runs in its final at-bat. Robert Cant, Mark Martone and Marko Jugovic each doubled in the sixth and final inning for the Whitecaps. Oakville never trailed in the semifinal, striking for three runs in the second inning. Jamison Higa, Lee Joch and Matt Des Vignes all doubled in the frame, and Matt McKay added an RBI single. The Whitecaps added a run in the fourth after Ancaster had pulled to within 3-2. Earlier in the tournament, Oakville edged Stoney Creek 2-1 in 10 innings, whipped Erindale, Dundas and Ancaster by 10-0 scores, and dropped a 10-0 decision of its own to High Park. If last night's scheduled final was rained out, the game was to be played tonight (Friday). U11C Thunder finalists in Burlington The Oakville A's AAA Rookieball team went undefeated to claim the title at the recent Brantford Minor Baseball Association tournament. The A's posted convincing victories over Brantford, Cambridge, Hamilton, and Guelph to advance to the championship game against North York. In the title match, Oakville escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the final inning to beat North York by a run. Members of the Oakville team are Noah Sinker, Andrew MacGrandle, Grant Paterson, Jordan Gamble, Ethan Hammond, Jacob Schuurman, Tyler Sagl, Luke Raczywolski, Matthew Stone, Tanner Elson, Mitchell Howie and Carter Pauley. Coaches are Troy Paterson, Richard Gamble, Drew Hammond and Ron Sagl, and the manager is Allen Elson. The Oakville Thunder boys under-11C team won four straight games before falling to the tournament hosts in the final of the Burlington Youth Soccer Club Tournament. Oakville opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over Kitchener B. They followed that up with a 1-0 victory over the Georgetown Mustangs, a team from the South Region Soccer League's first division. The Thunder posted its third win over the day by beating league rivals Burlington B 3-1 to secure top spot in its pool. The Thunder guaranteed itself a place in its first tournament final with a 2-0 shutout of Flamborough. Despite a strong showing by Oakville in the final, Burlington A prevailed with a 2-0 win.
