The kids picked up garbage for 30 hours or more, beginning in March as soon as the snow melted. Here, from left, Cassidy Taylor, Alisha Petgrave and Emery Williams show off their reward.The youths, between the ages of nine and 12 years, were selected by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton, which also co-ordinated the program and provided supervision while the youths were out completing the 30 hours of community service by cleaning up local parks and schools or assisting local community groups. Take a heritage walk with Historical Society downtown Join historical walking tours through Oakville's heritage areas presented by the Oakville Historical Society this summer. There are several walks from which to choose. Heritage Houses in Old Oakville tours the Old Oakville Heritage Conservation District, including 134 properties located south of Robinson Street from Navy to Reynolds streets and William to Navy streets. These walks take place on Sundays -- Aug. 2, Sept. 6 and Oct. 11. Departure and return is from the Oakville Historical Society located at 110 King St. Another tour focuses on the Heritage Main Street of Old Oakville and includes individual designations, including well over 50 buildings on Lakeshore Road East from Navy Street to Trafalgar Road. This tour takes place on Sundays -- Aug. 16, Sept. 20 and Oct. 18. Departure and return is from the Second Cup shop located at Lakeshore Road and Navy Street. Another tour is the Historical Walk of Trafalgar Road that includes the Trafalgar Road Heritage Conservation District and encompasses 188 properties located from Randall Street to Trafalgar Road and Cornwall Road to Spruce, Reynolds and Randall streets. This tour takes place on Sunday, Aug. 23, Monday, Sept. 7 and Sunday, Oct. 4. Departure and return is from St. John's United Church. All walks take place from 2-4 p.m. and refreshments are included at the conclusion. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $6 for children. Reservations are required.
