OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, August 5, 2009 · 12 9,000 kids sign up for daily physical activity tracker When the Virtual School Society (VSS) quietly launched its daily physical activity tracker in fall 2009 it had no idea what the response would be. A few months later with 9,000 students signed up, the small not-forprofit organization seems to have a success on its hands. In September 2008, as a means of promoting healthy, active lifestyles in schoolaged children, the British Columbia government introduced daily physical activity (DPA) as a requirement for all students. Schools must provide 30 minutes of activity up to Grade 9. Students in Grades 10 to 12 have to do 150 minutes of activity per week as part of their graduation requirement. It might not seem like a lot, but research shows that even this amount can have a lasting positive impact on children's health. VSS created the DPA tracker as a way for students and teachers to record this information. The VSS promotes online education through its portal LearnNowBC to BC students with a commitment to providing access to all of the province's K-12 online courses as well as tutoring, academic and career advising and library services. As VSS' project director Lynne Masse-Danes puts it, "While we recognize technology is an incredibly powerful tool in opening up options for children in education and in life, it's also important for them to be physically fit. The DPA tracker is a way to support children and schools in the effort to increase healthy physical activity. It's perfect for all children whether they're in a classroom or taking courses online and we're happy to make it available at no cost."
