The negotiated contract means Halton police will remain in the top five of best-paid officers in the province, based on a first class constable's salary of $78,418 this year rising to $83,274 on Jan. 1, 2011. First class constables, which officers become upon entering their fourth year with the force, make up around two-thirds of the police service's 587 uniformed officers. By comparison, the same level of constable in Toronto will receive $81,249 in 2010, the last year of that force's current contract. Halton has been recognized as the region with the lowest crime in the GTA and among the safest large communities in Canada, with only one recorded murder in 2008. However, salaries for officers aren't based on crime, but rather on an assessment of what officers are being paid in the 11 other large police services in the province, said Bob Maich, chair of the seven-mem NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER See Contract page 5 WATERWISE: Youths across town have learned to shiver while trying to get in a swim or some splashing in the wet, cool summer of 2009. However, late last week and the weekend finally offered up some steamy swimming temperatures to enjoy. Just before those temperatures hit their stride, above, the splash pad on Third Line produced both splash and cold -- sensations that leave Isabella Mercado braced for the feeling as the overflow bucket tips into action. The YMCA of Oakville's new CEO and president wasn't able to celebrate his two-month anniversary on the job. Dan Ferrone, a local businessman and former Toronto Argonaut who took over the position of president and CEO on June 1, was let go on July 31 when the board decided he `was not the right fit' for the job. Ferrone told The Oakville Beaver Tuesday afternoon he was upset with the decision. "Obviously, I am shocked Dan Ferrone and disappointed that the board of the YMCA unilaterally decided that I was not a `good fit' at the Oakville Y," said Ferrone. Kristian Knibutat, chair of the YMCA's board of directors, said he couldn't go into detail about the termination, saying that Ferrone simply wasn't the person to lead the YMCA of Oakville. "Dan Ferrone was in a three-month probationary period as the CEO of the Oakville YMCA and during this period the board of directors of the YMCA came to the view that Dan was not the right fit to lead the YMCA of Oakville," Knibutat said. "As a result, we terminated the relationship with Dan." Ferrone was selected from close to 100 applicants for the position.
