Fortunately, the end result is a delightfully entertaining comedy musical filled with nostalgic songs that are immediately recognizable to most members of the audience. Now playing at Stage West Mississauga, Breaking Up Is Hard to Do is set in a Catskills resort in the 1960s. It is the sweetly comic story of Lois and Marge, two friends from Brooklyn in search of romance and good times over one wild Labour Day Weekend. The score showcases 18 Neil Sedaka songs including Where the Boys Are, Sweet Sixteen, and Calendar Girl and of course, the chart topping title song Breaking Up is Hard to Do. Sedaka began his musical career as a songwriter in the legendary Brill Building in New York City, which served as the launching pad for many famous singer/songwriters such as Carole King and Neil Diamond. While at the Brill Building, Sedaka teamed up with lyricists Howard Greenfield and Cody Philip to produce most of the 18 songs featured in Breaking Up is Hard to Do. The bulk of the songs were penned in the early '60s and were mostly the innocent love songs that dominated the era's AM Top 40 play lists.
