When Gertrude Leigh first introduced her beau Joseph Anderson to her musical family in the mid-1930s he earned their instant approval because he could sing well. The high school sweethearts married in 1936, in her hometown of Scotia Junction, a train stop near Emsdale north of Huntsville, in the same church her mom and dad were wed. On Saturday (Aug. 22) they achieved what a very small percentage of Canadian couples have -- 73 years of marriage. A never-give-up attitude, humour, honesty, hard work and gratitude have carried the nonagenarians through more than seven decades. "And we can't afford a divorce," Joseph said jokingly, to which Gertrude added, "We just learned to put up with each other." It was the girl from out of town with the fiery red hair that attracted Joseph, the school jock and lifelong Oakville resident to his future wife. "She was, no make that is, quite a girl," said Joseph. Morden School where her children attended, as well as St. Jude's Anglican Church where the couple continues to worship. In the intervening years, the Andersons watched the town grow all around them; where once they were surrounded by farm fields and part of Trafalgar Township, they now are part of an urban setting. "I remember when our street was just a dirt road at the edge of town," said Gertrude. The nonagenarians are remarkable because not only are they among a tiny percentage of Canadians over age 90 (0.1 per cent of men and 0.3 per cent of women) they have beat all marriage odds too, in a time when more than 37 per cent of unions end in divorce before reaching the 30th anniversary. But these are not the records for which the Andersons are most proud. They say they are fortunate they're both healthy, that their kids are close to each other and their parents and that they are all very caring people.
