OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, August 27, 2009 · 8 Horse killed by truck Officers with the Oakville and District Humane Society's Animal Protective Services are at a loss to explain how a horse got from its barn to nearby Tremaine Road where a truck hit it early Wednesday morning. Police said the transport truck was driving in the area of Tremaine Road and Dundas Street at around 3:30 a.m. when it encountered the horse, which was standing in the middle of the road. The truck was unable to stop in time and collided with the horse, which was put down by police for compassionate reasons. Officers from the Oakville and District Humane Society's Animal Protective Services visited a nearby farm and spoke to the residents. The residents checked their barn and found their 30-year-old, brown mare was missing. The residents subsequently identified the horse on Tremaine Road as their missing horse. Animal Protective Services Officer Rob Bauer noted no charges have been laid as the residents had taken every precaution to secure their horse and how exactly the horse escaped remains a mystery. "The barn was secured properly," said Bauer. "They said their horse is not a jumper. They had an electrified fence. They just can't figure it out. They also have cows and the cows were secure." The driver of the transport truck was not injured during the accident and is not facing any charges.
