OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, August 28, 2009 · 14 FINAL SUMMER FINAL CLEARANCE SUMMER CLEARANC Barbecue run launches Terry Fox Run campaign Oakville residents are invited to attend the official 2009 Oakville Terry Fox Run Launch Lunch from 11:30-1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 2. "We are pleased to partner with the Kinsmen Club of Oakville and the Town of Oakville to present our first-ever Oakville Terry Fox Run kick-off at Town Hall to honour one of our Canadian heroes," said Ralph Robinson, chair of the Oakville Terry Fox Run. The Oakville Terry Fox Run Launch Lunch will be in front of Town Hall and Oakville residents are invited for barbecued hot dogs and sausages on a bun, potato chips and cold drinks (while supplies last). There is no cost for lunch, but a donation to the Oakville Terry Fox Run would be greatly appreciated. Pledge sheets and information about the run will be available at the lunch. Terry Fox Run T-shirts will be available for sale at $20 for adults and $17 for children. Mayor Rob Burton will welcome everyone just after noon. David Visschedyk will share some inspirational words with the lunch crowd. Visschedyk was diagnosed at eight years old with osteogenic sarcoma, the same type of cancer that Terry Fox had and, like Terry, his right leg was subsequently amputated. "We'll also be accepting donations of $1 from each Oakville resident at the lunch. Terry's dream was simple -- all he asked was that each person give $1," said Pam Damoff, Oakville Terry Fox Run volunteer. "Our community run can raise close to $170,000 this year if each person gives just $1." To assist with the fundraising efforts, PharmaSense is collecting $1 donations at their store at 2983 West Oaks Trail Blvd. Look for the giant fishbowl at the checkout. They will also be putting in a team at the Terry Fox Run, and have challenged other businesses to join them in either collecting loonies at their places of business or putting in a team on run day. This year marks the 29th Anniversary of the Terry Fox Run and all Oakville residents are invited to honour Terry Fox and raise money for cancer research. The event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 13 at Abbey Park Secondary School, next to the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre (Third Line south of Upper Middle Road). The run begins at 10 a.m., with registration beginning at 9 a.m. Participants can choose to run, walk, bicycle, or Rollerblade either a 5K or 10K route. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED On the day of the Terry Fox Run, adults with authority are required to assist police and security to ensure that traffic barriers are manned, provide directions and generally assist with traffic and crowd control. Adult volunteers with previous experience with crowd control are especially needed the morning of the run. Contact Damoff at 905-827-6338 or oakvilleterryfox@gmail.com if you are able to assist. % Sale on now. Limited time offer. W W W. F R E E D M A N S H O E S .
