The owner of the historic building at 1086 Burnhamthorpe Rd. E. has been restoring the house for 50 years. The house was built between 1827-53. A work in progress, the original barn has recently been transformed into a gallery. The Doors Open concept had its beginnings in France in 1984. From there it grew to European Heritage Days, in 11 countries. Today more than 40 countries, worldwide, have initiated the program. Each year in Ontario, hundreds of historic buildings, natural spaces and heritage gardens -- some of which are rarely accessible to the public -- open for free as part of Doors Open. Last year's inaugural Doors Open Oakville event was a success with more than 8,000 visitors contributing more that $200,000 to the local economy.
