When the two connected, Dogra found herself $5,000 richer as the winner of a $5,000 scholarship created this year to celebrate CFUWOakville's 60th anniversary. Each year, the CFUW-Oakville presents awards to assist young women pursuing post-secondary education. Dogra was selected from amongst 25 applicants. The youth graduated from Iroquois Ridge High School with a 96 per cent academic average and will attend McMaster University this fall to study health sciences. Dogra was student trustee for the Halton District School Board and an Ontario Student Trustees' Association policy committee member. Club members decided that in addition to fundraising for their regular awards, they would add one to recognize the milestone. The club wanted the award to be substantial -- to show how much value it places on higher education for women in the community. The target was set at $5,000 -- and members got busy planning activities as the members themselves already contribute more than $5,000 each year themselves. The first project was publishing a cookbook of recipes from members and local restaurants. Entitled Celebrations!, it also included beautiful sketches of the restaurants by club member and arts council/volunteer award-winner Sybil Rampen. The book was launched at Bookers last November and is currently sold there as well as on the club website and at club events. It has sold hundreds of copies, is in its fourth printing and all profits go to the scholarship fund. The club provides engaging speakers for its monthly meetings, but this year really scored with visits from Green Party Leader Elizabeth May and award-winning local author Laurence Hill. Guests and the public were invited for a small entry fee. Last spring, the club put together together a bridge and games luncheon for members and guests. It was nearly a sell out and as volunteers made and served the lunch, all ticket proceeds again went to the scholarship fund.
