Commuters get ready to grid and bear new transit system By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Ready or not Oakville Transit is moving to the grid system. Beginning Sunday, Sept. 6, Oakville Transit will feature a new route system, which Town officials are hoping will offer riders more direct travel across town. "This new transit system will give our residents what they've been asking for -- more convenience and more choice," said Mayor Rob Burton. "Improving public transportation in Oakville is a priority for council and is an essential element in creating a more livable and environmentally-responsible community." Changes in the transit system are being undertaken because under the existing design, bus service is largely focused around the town's GO stations. This design can prove exceedingly frustrating for commuters who just wanted to get across town. "The old system required anyone transferring to have to go to the GO station to get another bus to go where they were going and quite often they would have to backtrack across the same area," said Barry Cole, director of Oakville Transit Services.
