I had the impression that he just didn't want to meet with me." Critton published his memoirs this June, which made Mitchell realize the man wanted to benefit financially from his own story. Despite not being able to interview Critton, Mitchell says his account of the story is accurate. "I believe I captured his thoughts in this book maybe even better than his own memoirs will, because I was able to take actual fact and actual transcripts of what happened at the time," he said. "When he does his memoirs, he's remembering things that happened 30 years ago, so he probably doesn't remember as well." Critton is now leading a normal life in New York. He and Mitchell still occasionally correspond by email. A recent message came from Critton last week, asking Mitchell for an autographed copy of the book in exchange for a copy of his memoirs. "He couldn't be a teacher anymore because of the criminal background checks, but he helps mothers on welfare get education and support, mentors troubled youth, lives with his wife and has two kids who are both in university," Mitchell said. "I think I will get to meet him some day." This is Mitchell's second book. His first, The Class Project -- How to Kill A Mother based on the true story of a pair of Mississauga sisters who killed their mother in Jan. 2003, was published last spring. The book was well-received in various parts of Canada, with an American television station recently buying the rights for the story for a made-for-TV movie. "Lifetime Movie Network in the United States, a cable network, is going to film it up here (in Canada)," he said. Mitchell is continuing to serve double duty as both a reporter and author. As the Star's lead crime reporter for Halton and Peel, Mitchell spends the majority of his days in a courthouse in Brampton. The Ryerson journalism graduate started in sports at the Toronto Star in 1977, but a shuffle to news reporting led him to the crime beat, where he has remained for the past 15 years. He has covered some of the worst crimes imaginable, but said it generally doesn't affect him. However, he added that despite his many years on the beat, he still finds it difficult to listen to victim impact statements. "The only time it affects me is at the victim's impact statement," he said. "That can be pretty devastating, seeing parents stand up there crying, and it becomes a real emotional moment in the courtroom. You wonder sometimes how they get the strength to do that. Sometimes you almost forget to take notes because you are just listening." The crime beat continues to stay fresh for Mitchell, who said he has no plans of retiring any time soon. He happily resides in Bronte with his wife, Kim and Shih Tzu, Willow. He said he enjoys spending time with his two adult children, including daughter Ashley and son Jayson, who is married to wife Jen and has a son named Nathan. Mitchell is already writing his next book, which is a fictional work called Grave Deception based on a real murder case. The story is set in the fictional town of Bronte, New York. Mitchell said it will likely be released in 2010. "I cover so many murder trials that I always have lots of ideas for books," he said.
