Dealing with dyslexia Ronald D. Davis, once labeled mentally retarded because of his autism and severe dyslexia, is today an expert on dyslexia and will be speaking in Oakville tomorrow. Davis will tell his personal story at Le Dome on Thursday, Sept. 10 from 7-9 p.m. Davis reports that dyslexia is the result of a highly visualspatial way of thinking, not a neurological dysfunction, as many people believe. Since dyslexic individuals think in pictures, they struggle to make sense of words and symbols for which they have no mental images. They can think easily (and therefore read and write) words such as cat, elephant, or motorcycle. However, they are confused by words such as the, of or which. The confusion leads to a state of disorientation in which perception is not accurate. Inaccurate perception is at the basis of dyslexia, according to Davis. His own experience led him to create the Davis Dyslexia Correction Program and establish Davis Dyslexia Association international. His book, The Gift of Dyslexia, is now available in 19 languages, and there are more than 700 Davis Facilitators worldwide, including three in Oakville. Davis' lecture will address the background and development of the Davis Dyslexia Correction methods, how dyslexics think and learn and why it is a gift, how dyslexia develops and how it can be corrected. Davis advocates that dyslexic individuals are more environmentally aware and curious than the average person. Julia Shier is one Oakville student who discovered the thrill of learning to read The Davis Way with facilitator Cathy Dodge Smith. Shier was so excited at the end of her one-week program that she went to school and told her teacher and her classmates all about her gift of dyslexia. "I think it really improved my reading skills and the math program helped keep me on the same page as my classmates. Now I feel much more confident about school. My dial helps me control when I can be bouncy and rambunctious and when I can calm down and go to sleep. My focus helps me to stay on track. I like my mind's eye because I can move it where I want it at any time any place. Even though I'm different, I'm glad to be different because I can see words in pictures so stories come to life when I read them. I'm really glad that I am going to meet Ron Davis," said Shier. With her friend Emily Walsh, the two girls have clay dates to work on their Davis follow-up work together. These clay models help the girls understand the meanings of abstract words so they can read and spell them. To pre-register for the lecture, go to www.rondavislectures.com.
