Terry Fox's lasting legacy David Visschedyk is alive thanks to cancer research funded by the Terry Fox Run By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER OFF TO A GOOD START: Reverend Canon Joseph Asselin, of St. Cuthbert's Anglican Church, blesses Sarah Asselin's backpack. The Grade 6 student's backpack was one of many, along with books and laptops, that were blessed at the church on Sunday to help start the new school year. In April 1980, Terry Fox set out to run across Canada -- asking every Canadian to contribute $1 to raise cash to cure cancer. Oakville's David Visschedyk was only a year old at the time. History knows Fox had to cut short his Marathon of Hope when his cancer spread to his lungs and he later died. Seven years later, young David was diagnosed with the exact same bone cancer as Fox, osteogenic sarcoma. He, too, had his right leg amputated. Today, Fox is a Canadian hero. A bronze monument of Fox stands at the spot on the TransCanada Highway near Thunder Bay where he had to give up his marathon. When the Olympic Torch Run passed through Oakville in 1988, David carried it in his wheelchair. Twenty-nine years later, Canadians and others around the world, continue his dream when, each September, they run in or sponsor the Terry Fox Run. Last Wednesday, the local Kinsmen Club held a barbecue at Town Hall to promote the upcoming Sunday, Sept. 13 Terry Fox Run at Abbey Park High School. Town Councillor and long-time Terry Fox Run chair Ralph Robinson remembers picking up Visschedyk from classes at Pinegrove School as the youngster travelled around local schools talking to See Find page 5 See Terry page 3 SERVING OAKVILLE FOR 25 YEARS! 175 Wyecroft Rd.
