Region preparing to deliver flu shots 9 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, September 10, 2009 Continued from page 1 Nosal said the Region estimates about 60 per cent of Halton residents -- or well over 200,000 people -- will get the vaccine protecting against H1N1 once it begins to arrive in mid-November. It's likely the vaccine would be delivered in two doses, Nosal added. Health officials would only be able to deliver about 35,000 vaccinations per week, meaning the Region will follow provincial guidelines on priority recipients, said Nosal. Such first tier recipients would likely include groups at higher risk of developing complications due to H1N1 such as pregnant women, people with chronic underlying illnesses and long-term care home residents, said Nosal. Other priority groups could include health care workers and parents of infants under six months of age who can't be vaccinated, he added. The Region is looking at setting up seven fixed site clinics to administer H1N1 vaccines, including two each in Burlington and Oakville and one each in Milton, Acton and Georgetown, Nosal said. Overall, the H1N1 mass immunization program would be far larger than the annual seasonal influenza shots given out in October. For that program, entering its 10th year as a fully-funded program in Ontario, the Region delivers between 140,000 to 150,000 doses of vaccine, said Nosal. An estimated 39 per cent of adults and 69 per cent of seniors over 65 received the seasonal influenza vaccine during the 2008/09 flu season, according to a Regional survey. However, the Region expects the percentage of those who get that flu shot -- which protects against two Influenza A and one Influenza B virus strains -- to go up this October when the Region rolls out the clinics. Nosal said the Province will deliver a brochure to provincial households later this month explaining three points: first, there will be both seasonal influenza and H1N1 vaccination clinics this year; second, the seasonal flu vaccine doesn't protect against H1N1; and third, the H1N1 clinics will start about a month after the seasonal flu clinics.
