OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, September 10, 2009 · 16 Health Oakville Beaver First arrest made in upcoming Jail'N Bail event When Dan Beaman, activities co-ordinator of Queen's Avenue Retirement Home, arrived to work recently, his manager, Nicola Houlihan, had quite the surprise for him. She handed him a set of jailbird stripes and a warrant for his arrest -- all part of the 2009 Canadian Cancer Society Jail-N-Bail event set to take place on Friday, Oct. 23 at Oakville Place Shopping Mall. The Canadian Cancer Society Jail-N-Bail will see Beaman and other community `felons' come to a makeshift jail at Oakville Place to do some time for a good cause. Upon arrival, jailbirds will plea their cases before celebrity judges who will set bail for each perpetrator. Sentencing will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Once in jail, participants will have the chance to call friends, colleagues, their mom -- anyone who will help them raise their bail (pledges are set at a pre-determined amount) to help set them free. Thanks to Telus at Oakville Place, jailbirds will have luxury of using a new Telus phone to use in their efforts to raise their bail during their stay in jail. "I have never been in trouble with the law before." Daniel Beaman, Queen's Avenue Retirement Home "I have never been in trouble with the law before," said a surprised Beaman upon his arrest. When he asked Houlihan what humorous charges the staff at Queen's Avenue had him arrested on, she told him he'd have to wait until his sentencing on Oct. 23 to find out. The bail money raised from the Canadian Cancer Society Jail-N-Bail will help fund research on all types of cancer, offer comprehensive and credible information on cancer, risk reduction and treatment and provide support for people living with cancer, family members and friends.
