Halton police will be checking to see if that is the case throughout the month of September as they initiate Project KARS (Kids Are Restrained Safely). The project seeks to increase the effective use of child safety seats through education and enforcement. Police also point out that all children up to eight years of age, children weighing less than 80 lbs (36 kgs) or children less than 4-foot-9 in height must be secured in a child safety seat. Some exemptions apply with taxis and vehicles transporting for hire. A full list of exemptions can be found on www.haltonpolice.ca. Having children improperly restrained in a car is not only unsafe, but is a violation of the Highway Traffic Act and can result in a fine of $110 and two demerit points. On Saturday, Oakville Town Hall, located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd., will be hosting Traffic Safety Day, which will include a workshop that will demonstrate the proper way to install a car safety seat in secure a child in it.
