21 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 11, 2009 Open House for Hope invoking power of the arts H ello from Halla. Our herd was passing through the northern part of South Africa the other evening when we witnessed the most beautiful sunset and heard the distant sound of beating ceremonial drums. My grandmother said the dark red and gold sky reminded her of a painting she once saw in someone's house. That got me to thinking about the power of the arts. The arts can make a big difference in people's lives. In South Africa, Thabo, age four, was brought to the hospital shortly after his mother's death. Traumatized and terrified, he wouldn't stop kicking, screaming and crying. Two music therapists sat beside him and began to weave the pitch of his crying into their songs. Still, tearful, the boy finally allowed himself to be carried into a music therapy session where he tentatively banged at a drum. When the therapists demonstrated their empathy by picking up his beat on their guitars, Thabo's face lit up with delight. Now, months later, he is considered well integrated and attending preschool. Thabo's transformation was orphaned by AIDS. That's half of Canada's population. The arts have universal appeal around the world. My friends in Oakville just let me know that there will be a very special performing and visual arts event on September 19th at Iroquois Ridge High School. The Open House for Hope combines visual arts, music, and dance in an effort to raise awareness and money as part of Oakville's $Million or More Campaign in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The Open House for Hope will feature an arts exhibit with local and community involvement, a dance workshop for anyone over 10 years of age, a battle of the bands, and a spectacular evening show. The battle of the bands starts at noon and participants audition for three spots in the evening performance, when one will become the winning band. Also during the day, there will be an exhibit of local emerging visual artists and a jazz and contemporary dance workshop. The evening performance will include a collection of visual arts, an original dance piece by Michelle Zetts and Sarah Mackie, a performance by Oakville based band Avarice, and the three finalists from the Battle of the Bands. York University student Michelle Zetts is working with York and Oakville folks to make it all happen. Admission is by donation, and I hope I will see you there. -- Halla is a 13-yearold female African Savannah Elephant working with $Millions or More Oakville ($MOMO) to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) and the fight against AIDS in Africa. MTCC's music therapy work is so innovative and groundbreaking that it has inspired a number of other grassroots organizations to replicate their programs. These efforts are so important, especially when you realize that estimates now suggest that by 2010 there could be as many as 15.7 million children under 18 in Africa 905.849.0266 REFLEXOLOGY & YOGA WITH SUSY · Foot Reflexology works wonderfully in conjuction with Yoga asanas · Reflexology is administered before your medical appointment with Dr. OZ · Susy's trained fingers can help restore internal balance "My practice has improved tremendously ever since I have taken YOGA WITH SUSY." - Charlene Pauls SUSY." Mulvale celebrating 60 for 60 for $MOMO It will be 60 for 60 as former mayor Ann Mulvale celebrates her 60th birthday and invites everyone to the party. Mulvale is inviting everyone to the party -- and asking they donate $60 to the $Million or More Oakville ($MOMO) to benefit the Stephen Lewis Foundation and its fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. The $MOMO campaign began more than a year ago hoping to raise $1 million, or more, for the fight against AIDS by World AIDS Day on Dec. 1. While hundreds of thousands have been raised -- through all kinds of events, large and small, from Lewis himself speaking in town, to bake sales being held -- the campaign will be stretching to reach its goal as it continues to struggle with an economy fraught by financial woes. Still, Mulvale remains hopeful and is earmarking her birthday as yet another means of trying to raise funds. The celebration will be held Thursday, Oct. 1 from 7-10 p. m. at the Operating Engineers Banquet Hall located at 2245 Speers Rd. Emcee for the event will be campaign honourary co-chair and local author Sally Armstrong. If you want to donate more... $1,000 will get you one minute at the microphone, $100 donation will get your requested topic addressed by Mulvale at the mike. A bid for a veto card will protect against a potentially embarrassing story being shared. There are no tickets for the event, but confirmation of attendance can be made by contacting millionormoreslf@sympatico.ca with the names of attendees or http://stephenlewisfoundation.akaraisin.com/p/mulvalecelebrates60.aspx. RSVPs can also be mailed with a cheque donation payable to Stephen Lewis Foundation, $Million or More Oakville, 2415 Highcroft Rd.
