27 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 11, 2009 Burlington SuperWalk welcomes Oakville neighbours Organizers of this Sunday's SuperWalk for Parkinson's hope an increase in the number of walkers from neighbouring Oakville will help boost them to new levels for participation and funds raised. "Our communities are closely linked and some Oakville people are members of the Burlington Parkinson Support Group", said Jane Langlotz, chair of the ninth annual Burlington SuperWalk. Many Burlington residents are members of the Parkinson exercise program at the Oakville YMCA. Another available resource is a weekly exercise class run by volunteers at St. Jude's Church in Oakville. Information on other services available for people with Parkinson's in Halton Region is available by contacting Parkinson Society Canada, Central and Northern Ontario Region at www.parkinson.ca. Funds raised from the SuperWalk support research into "easing the burden and finding the cure" for Parkinson's. The disease strikes one out of 200 people over the age of 60 and one of 100 people over 70; however, an increase in the diagnosis of younger men and women in their 40s is a growing concern. Last year, 141 walkers, including family and friends, took part in the Burlington SuperWalk and raised a record $80,000. Donations can also be made online at www.superwalk.com. Registration for Sunday's walk begins at 12 noon at the Burlington Seniors Centre, 2285 New St. with the walk set for 1 p.m. Other area SuperWalks are being held in Georgetown and Hamilton.
