The Business Software Alliance (BSA), a nonprofit global trade organization charged with advancing the goals of the software industry, announced Monday that Freight Logix, Inc./Accellos Canada was among 12 Canadian companies caught in a BSA investigation into the 9 L O C A T I O N S use of unlicenced copies of software. "With so many cost-cutting measures taking place these days, it's critical for companies to manage their software assets properly. Cutting corners in the short term can ultimately prove costly in the long run." Accellos CEO Michael Cornell noted the role his company played in the use of unlicenced software was unintentional. "As a software company, we fully support the goals and mission of the BSA," he said. "We are a company that grows through acquisition and we were unaware of the inadvertent use of unlicenced software in one of our acquired offices. Once we learned of the issue, we were happy to work closely with BSA to ensure our software is fully licenced." A recent BSA study noted software piracy continues to be a serious problem in Canada with 32 per cent of PC software installed on computers in Canada in 2008 being pirated. This meant a retail loss of $1.2 billion. A 2008 study by the Economist Intelligence Unit said despite high scores in the areas of IT infrastructure and development of human capital, Canada falls behind other countries, when it comes to fostering a legal environment for intellectual property.
