Letter to the editor 7 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 18, 2009 Keep grass not lights Men could offer up their seat While I do not regularly ride the GO Train, my visibly pregnant wife does on an almost daily occasion. I have learned from her and other similarly-situated women that seats can be in short supply for pregnant women during their commutes. This is a troubling and unfortunate reality. There are legitimate medical reasons why pregnant women should be seated while riding public transportation. In this vein, I would especially ask the able-bodied men of Oakville and surrounding areas to be attuned to the needs of pregnant women in their midst while riding the GO Train or other public transportation. This consideration needs to be matched by a willingness to make the small sacrifice of offering their seat to a pregnant woman with no seat, when such circumstances arise. This is the least we can do to respect pregnant women and the nascent human life they carry. While there is no enforceable code of chivalry in this day and age, I hope to learn in the future that local acts of chivalry have rescued pregnant women, including my wife, from having to stand during their commutes. LUKASZ PETRYKOWSKI Continued from page 6 cerns have not changed in 21 years -- light pollution, noise from crowds, traffic, public address systems and post game tailgate parties. Plus, parking problems spilling into residential streets, needed toilet facilities, policing of events/security and litter. The installation of lights will allow for a business sports entertainment complex to operate in the middle of a residential area late into the night, from early spring to late fall. I am very concerned about the impact that the artificial turf and sports field lights will have regarding human health, energy consumption, global warming and the ecology. I think the HCDSB is leaving a giant carbon footprint in Halton Region. The solution is simple: install the upgraded eight-lane track, keep the natural grass and do not install lights.
