OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, September 23, 2009 · 10 Group envisions Halton Centre for Social Innovation By Tim Foran METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP A local group is seeking to lift the burden of office work from the backs of non-profit groups to allow them to focus "on doing good." The Halton Centre for Social Innovation, an idea without a permanent home as of yet, is the ultimate goal of a steering committee hoping to provide an address, back office support and place to network for non-profits, charities and companies with a social mission. The group held the Shared Spaces Forum at Halton Region's headquarters Friday to outline the concept to representatives of more than 100 groups in attendance. "Sharing the back office services takes the administrative stuff off their plate so they can focus on doing good," Steven Rieck, the lead for Halton CSI, said Tuesday. The group is modelling its efforts on an existing shared space, the Toronto CSI, which both houses and provides administrative sup- port to 150 "social mission" groups from its 23,000square-foot office near downtown Toronto. A similar facility in Halton would provide administrative efficiencies by consolidating support staff, said Rieck. Such support services would include a shared reception, booking of meeting rooms, bookkeeping and accounting, but could also extend to areas such as sharing web and graphic designers or assistance in organizing conferences, he added. "All of the stuff a lot of these groups tend to get bogged down in and (which) quite frankly burns them out," Rieck said. "Building offices is only part of this," he added. "The real advantage of this is the mindshare that takes place within the walls." The Toronto CSI has almost quadrupled in physical size since launching five years ago and is "lucky to have a crazy (tenant) waitlist," said its executive director Tonya Surman, the keynote speaker at the Halton forum. The facility's tenants are an almost equal mix of charities, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies with a social purpose, she said. Some organizations rent private suites -- there's a maximum of two -- while others simply want to rent a desk, but with the ability to access meeting rooms, faxes, Internet, and other accoutrements of a typical office. Allowing small non-profits to move out of the home office and into a professional work environment also enables them to increase their profile, attract more funders and retain volunteers and staff," Surman added. The Halton Shared Space Forum is part of the first phase of Halton CSI's exploration of the creation of a shared space, said Rieck. The group is currently compiling data from an online survey it has put out to the non-profit community. The next step will take place Oct. 14 when interested parties will gather to begin work on the creation of a business plan for the facility and to start fundraising, he said. "Ideally, we'd like to find a local angel investor to make this a reality." For more information, visit http://haltoncsi.ca.
