Police get one suicide call a day Halton Region is reminding residents about available resources to prevent one of Canada's major causes of death -- suicide. In recognition of the recent World Suicide Prevention Day, the Region is working with the Halton Suicide Prevention Coalition (HSPC) to promote awareness of the warning signs of suicide and available support to help prevent it. Information can be found on the HSPC website, www.suicidepreventionhalton.ca. As of Sept. 3 of this year, Halton's police had received 170 calls related to suicide -- about a call a day. According to the HSPC's website, there are about 28 deaths from suicide in Halton a year and 420 hospitalizations from attempted suicides. It's the second leading cause of death of people aged 10 to 24, the website states. "There is a strong stigma associated with suicide because most of us don't want to talk about it," said Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton's medical officer of health. The HSPC website includes information on early warning signs that someone might be considering suicide, and how to deal with that situation. It also includes contact information for Halton-based support services, including crisis and distress lines and ongoing support programs.
