Town and Catholic school board at odds over Loyola field lights Field lights approved in Milton and Burlington 5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, September 23, 2009 Continued from page 1 lighting at Loyola." Allan Elgar, Ward 4 councillor and member of the Town's Site Plan Committee, confirmed the school board needs to apply separately for the lights through a site plan application. "They do need site plan approval for that work," said Elgar. "They didn't ask at all for the lighting. They asked to redo the track, but nothing to do with the lighting." Loyola is one of four Catholic high schools, including Notre Dame and Assumption in Burlington and Bishop Reding in Milton, receiving new allweather tracks and sports fields this fall. Field lights were included in the Bishop Reding and Notre Dame projects. Corbacio said the school board had no difficulty receiving permission from Town of Milton and City of Burlington for the lights. "In the case of Milton, no site plan was required for that one," he said. "For Burlington, we had an agreement for the field itself. These two different communi- ties have not required the same process as the Town of Oakville is now requiring us to go through." Corbacio said there is no difference in the areas around the three different schools, saying all are pre-existing residential areas. "They (Bishop Reding and Notre Dame neighbourhoods) are identical, if not closer, in those cases," he said. "We did have concerns raised by residents, but we addressed them the same way we addressed them at Loyola." Residents around Loyola are strongly opposed to the lights, according to Elgar, who said he has received many phone calls and e-mails on the issue. One longtime area resident has also distributed flyers informing residents of the lights and is in the process of starting a petition. Corbacio said only the Loyola field lights will be discussed at the OMB. The school board made a request last year to install lights at the new St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School. The Town's Site Plan Committee has not yet made a decision on the issue.
