Oakville posted five wins and a tie in its six games, allowing only one goal in each contest. The Oakville Fine Homes masters men's soccer team will shoot for an eastern Canadian championship next month at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan. Oakville qualified for the tournament by outlasting the Markham Lightning in the recent Ontario Cup final, a game that required a 14-round shootout to decide after the teams finished regulation in a scoreless stalemate. Lee Davison scored the final goal of the shootout for Oakville, which converted 11 of its 14 shots. Oakville keeper Dino Perri then turned aside Markham's last attempt to clinch the team's first trip to the eastern Canadian tournament. "We feel pretty strongly about our chances," said Oakville's Hunter Madeley, who scored twice in the shootout. "Markham pretty handily won the eastern Canadians last year, once they got out of Ontario. It appears that the strength of the eastern Canadian finals is in Quebec and Ontario." The eastern Canadian tournament will begin Oct. 9, with the championship game slated for Oct. 12. Other members of the Fine Homes over-35 team, mainly comprised by Oakville and Burlington residents, are Ryan Gamble, Cam Walker, George Sousa, Alan Darragh, Peyvand Mossavat, Carmine Issacco, Steve Ottman, Steve Brockband, Nico Zrno, Chico Rodrigues, Pat Brodie, Dino Lopez, Ray Wark, Lucio Ianiero, Jamie Parkes, Johnny Williams, Ricky Titus, Dana Peoples, Lyndon Hooper, George Kyriakakos and Tony Tavares. Jacob Gower had the other goal in the game for Oakville, which finished the tournament with a 5-0-1 record. The 12-team competition included South Central Triple A, Alliance, Greater Toronto Hockey League and USA Hockey teams. In the qualifying round, Oakville defeated London Green 3-1, Sun County 3-1 and Windsor 5-1, and tied London Gold 1-1. The Rangers then knocked off the Burlington Eagles -- a team that Oakville had not been able to beat in six meetings last season -- by a 3-1 score in the semifinal.
