OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, September 24, 2009 · 4 Liberal nomination meeting draws interest Continued from page 2 "When hundreds of thousands of people lost their jobs, when families lost their homes, when families lost their life savings, Harper said there is no recession. Now he has the audacity to say and take credit for the recovery from a recession, which they denied ever occurred in the first place." Connie Laurin-Bowie, leader of Inclusion International, used her allotted time to give hope to Liberal members that the time has arrived to return to power. "It is a great time to be a Liberal in national politics," said Laurin-Bowie, who did a portion of her speech in French. "After too many years of the politics of George Bush and Stephen Harper, we're moving into the poli- "I think the fact there was such a huge turnout shows people want change." Max Khan, Oakville Liberal candidate tics of hope of Barack Obama and Michael Ignatieff." Ward 3 Town Councillor Mary Chapin rounded out the group. Like others, she drew on the record of the Liberals when they were in power, citing issues like Kyoto, child care and the deficit. "I recall just a few short years ago when the Canadian government was counted upon across the globe to do the right thing... Now, we have a Conservative government who has destroyed much of what we worked so hard to build," Chapin said. "(This has happened) in just over three years. Imagine what Canada will look like if we give them three more?" Many of the candidates paid homage to Brown, who was at the meeting and stayed throughout the evening to see her successor named. Like the hundreds of Liberals who packed the Speers Road building last night, Brown is optimistic the next election, which she predicted will be in 2010, will be theirs. "I am hoping for a Liberal majority," said Brown. "There has been a tremendous resurgence of interest in this riding with this change in the Liberal Party. We have about 2,500 members on the books and that is the basis of the army we need. We'll be able to do it with that many people." Khan is also confident in his chances of taking the Oakville riding. "I think the fact there was such a huge turnout shows people want change," he said. "We've got a lot of work to do, but the first thing we have to do is unite this party. We need to work collectively and if we can do that, I think we can go far."
