OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 25, 2009 · 4 Baby couldn't wait for hospital Continued from page 1 "We had reading material ready to go." All of these things proved unnecessary. At around 1 a.m. on Sept. 17 Brenda woke up to contractions and let Peter know it was time to go to the hospital. At this point both parents-to-be were calm as they packed for the trip, however, that changed when Brenda's water broke 15 minutes later. "After my water broke I said to Pete, `We're not going to make it to Toronto' and he said, `Okay, we'll take you Oakville Trafalgar Hospital.' A couple minutes later I said, `We're not going to make it to Oakville," said Brenda. "Call 911." After making the call, Peter was told that an ambulance was being dispatched to his location and in the meantime the 911 operator told Peter how to help Brenda with her breathing. By this time, Brenda was no longer calm and was afraid of what would happen if the baby arrived before the paramedics did. "I don't know how long it took before the ambulance showed up, it felt like forever, but it must have been within 10 minutes," said Peter. "In the meantime Brenda's contractions were getting more frequent and she's starting to look serious and she kept saying, `Baby's going to be coming.'" Peter had to tell the 911 operator to instruct the paramedics to let themselves in because Brenda refused to let go of his hand. The paramedics initially tried to take Brenda to the hospital, but quickly decided to perform the delivery in the Hajdus' bedroom after she insisted the baby was coming now. "They (the paramedics) just kind of took charge and I felt a little bit relieved by that," said Peter. "They told her to push and a couple pushes later that was it. Within 15 minutes of them showing up the baby came out." Seconds later Jordon Reese Hajdu took her first breath and cried for the first time. Peter noted that the reality of what had happened only truly hit him after one paramedic congratulated him and said, `It's a girl.' Both parents are offering a huge thank you to their paramedic heroes, Tom, Becky, Aubrey, Dan and Dave, for the amazing work they did during those early morning hours. "They were awesome," said Brenda. "They were so good. I am just very grateful for the EMS system that we have available to us. They just put us at ease and they were quick and professional. Everyone was doing something and they were just organized and together and they really provided us with peace of mind because we were terrified. You're just concerned about the worst." After the delivery, the paramedics let Peter cut the umbilical cord and hold his new daughter. Finally, everyone was taken to OakvilleTrafalgar Memorial Hospital. Mother and baby are both doing fine.
