7 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 25, 2009 Better locations for methadone clinic Continued from page 6 residence, a centre for developmentally challenged individuals and a bustling, caring community. We, in our community, have become comfortable with walking, shopping, and playing locally. The residents, shop owners and Kerr Street BIA have worked long and hard to make the community inviting and safe. Public perception of a facility such as this one is that it is not a good thing -- therefore it is not good for the health of the community. This is definitely not an appropriate location for the clinic. Patients can include doctors, teachers, parents, neighbours and other respected members of the community. We doubt that these people will feel comfortable with their neighbours watching them enter or exit the clinic. They need privacy and to be shown dignity and respect. There are definitely more appropriate locations -- ideally the hospital. Traditionally, hospitals have been the vehicle for health care. Barring that, Oakville has quite a few light industrial areas that would be much more appropriate. These areas are all on the bus route and rent would likely be less expensive as well. An Oakville Beaver (Sept. 11) editorial, Community needs methadone clinic, assumed that because the community is calm in its approach to this situation that somehow meant we were not opposed to it. Not so. We have been asked to be patient and we have been, but if this is allowed to go through, the community will be united and fight back -- we will not ever accept this facility in our community.
