Former Oakville mayor Ann Mulvale is celebrating her birthday in style this year with a fun event to raise funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation and its grassroots efforts to turn the tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa. Mulvale and $Million Or More Oakville ($MOMO) present this event as part of a two-year campaign aiming to increase community education and financial support of the HIV/AIDS situation in Africa. The evening will feature Sally Armstrong, $MOMO Honourary Chair, award-winning author and human rights activist, as emcee. There will be live entertainment, silent and live auctions, refreshments and a cash bar. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at 2245 Speers Rd. RSVP in advance or at the door by donation, $60 or more is suggested to celebrate 60 years. Entertainment will include performances by popular tenor Mervyn Russell, soft jazz and adult contemporary band Sidebar, as well as cover band Overland Express playing a variety of classical rock and country from the last 50 years. Reaching out to abandoned cats Every year countless cats are abandoned by their owners and left to fend for themselves on the streets. With cold weather on the way, Abandoned Cats Rescue whose goal is to save cats that are in desperate need of help, is hosting a fundraiser. Tonight, Abandoned Cats Rescue volunteers will serve guests at Boston Pizza to raise money to assist in reversing this inhumane reality. Ten per cent of food sales from 5-9 p.m. will go to help save the lives of feline friends in need. Boston Pizza located at 2011 Winston Park Dr. Funds raised will be used to cover medical costs for abandoned cats until they find a home. Abandoned Cats Rescue is a Canadian Registered Charity that saves many of their cats from an out-of-town animal control, typically the day before they would be euthanized. Until the cats are adopted, they are placed in volunteer foster homes. All adoption fees and donations go entirely to assisting the cats in their care.
