23 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 2, 2009 Amazing Race against time in Oakville for Africa H ello from Halla! Our herd has been travelling a lot lately, passing villages where we see grandmothers caring for their grandchildren because their parents have died. I can relate to that since my grandmother takes care of my sister, brother and me while helping to lead our herd. My grandmother says someday we will need to take care of her, but right now, we feel safe and know she loves us very much. My grandmother then told me the story of a 96-year-old Malawi grandmother named Verelina, a witty and youthful woman caring for her four orphaned grandchildren. After her children died, Verelina fell into a deep depression, acutely aware of the hurdles she faced trying to raise four children with no way to provide for their basic needs. Meals were scarce and the grass thatch roof on her small home was constantly leaking. The mud floor was uneven, which meant that collecting water was a breeding ground for mosquitoes and a risk for malaria. That's when Hope for the Elderly (HOFE) stepped in. HOFE reaches 102 grandmothers in 12 villages. Through 40 volunteers, they work to rebuild houses, cultivate gardens, bring water and deliver food, lead support groups and visit the sick. HOFE responds specifically to the issues grandmothers are facing in the context of HIV and AIDS. HOFE volunteers rebuilt Verelina's house, and now bring her food parcels and check in regularly. Verelina also joined a HOFE support group that meets each week under a tree or in someone's home to talk, share and even laugh. Verelina is now proud to show her home, and proud of her grandchildren's success in school. To see how Malawi's Hope for the Elderly has given a 96-year-old grandmother a renewed sense of purpose and belonging is a perfect example of what turning the tide is all about -- another organization supported by the Stephen Lewis Foundation to help Turn The Tide of AIDS in Africa. That got me to thinking about Ann Mulvale, also a grandmother, and a leader like my grandmother, who works on behalf of the $Million or More Oakville ($MOMO) campaign. She celebrated her birthday on Thursday, Oct. 1 as a fundraiser for $MOMO. And, on Oct. 3 don't forget about the Amazing Race Against Time, where teams will compete for three hours in challenges designed to test their mental and physical abilities. The event is a creative spin on the television show and the title of Stephen Lewis' book Race Against Time. The race is a repeat from last year's very suc- cessful fundraiser for $MOMO. I went in 2008, and it was very inspiring to see so many athletic people of all ages working together to help the Stephen Lewis Foundation in its support of more than 300 projects in 15 African countries.
