OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 2, 2009 · 8 A N N O U N C E M E N T We would like to welcome Lab tests confirm H1N1 virus in Halton Halton's medical officer of health suspects there has been an outbreak of pandemic H1N1 flu virus among staff at a long-term care home in Burlington. Dr. Bob Nosal said "over 10" staff at the home are confirmed to have Influenza A. However, he said it's almost guaranteed further sub-typing tests will show the flu strain to be pandemic H1N1. The reason for Nosal's assessment is that one of the ill staff members has an "epidemiological link" -- a personal connection -- with one of two adults in Halton with the first confirmed cases of the pandemic H1N1 flu virus in the region this fall. While flu outbreaks are not uncommon in long-term care homes, this one is unique in that it has so far hit only staff -- not elderly residents. Nosal said that might be because of the residents' residual immunity to H1N1, or swine flu. "People born before 1957 are thought to have been exposed to the swine flu virus or a strain of it," said Nosal. Staff at the long-term care home, which the Region is not identifying, have suffered the usual flu symptoms of fever, cough and sore throats, said Nosal. Some staff had them in early September and have presumably returned to work, he added. There have been no hospitalizations due to the virus this fall. Union vote for part-time Sheridan staff Part-time support staff at Sheridan College are voting on whether to join the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU). A vote will be held Oct 13 at the Trafalgar Road Campus and Oct. 19 at the Skills Training Centre on Iroquois Shore. Combined with staff at Brampton, it is part of the largest union certification vote in Ontario history, with up to 10,000 college parttimers eligible to cast votes. "Part-timers sit side-by-side with full-time staff and do the same work for less pay, no benefits and no guarantee of work from one semester to the next," said Libby Simpson, representing Sheridan workers. "It's very unfair because they bring the same level of skills, experience and qualifications to the job." Until last year, it was against the law in Ontario for part-time support staff to unionize. "What does it say about our province when institutions like our colleges offer nothing more than precarious, part-time, temporary work to more than 60 per cent of support staff?" said Simpson. "We need good jobs with decent wages and benefits in order to raise our families and build strong communities." About half of college part-timers are student workers involved in financial assistance programs like the Ontario Work Study Plan, said OPSEU student organizer Kiera Chion. THE END OF AN ERA!
